I’m Alex – an over-thinker, over-sharer and over-googler who over-researched her way to intentionally conceiving twins and is now living her dream twin mom life.
I’ve been met with plenty of “oh, you’ve got your hands full” and “wow, you must be busy” remarks (with a few “you’re so lucky!” scattered in there, but there are few people that actually get it, the true joy of having twins, the excitement, and the desire to have twins. I don’t talk about this much in my “real” life mom circles because most people don’t understand that I genuinely dreamed of having twins, and that my life truly feels complete with my babies now.
But if you’re reading this, then it’s likely that you do get it – and that you’re my kind of person. So really, I started this blog to connect with you – a current or aspiring twin mom, because deep down I believe I played a role in making my dream of twins a reality, and it’s possible that you could too. And if you’re already living the dream, then let’s talk about how we can make the most of every minute of it.
About me:
- I over-Google everything
- I test from 6dpo each month
- I have awful line eyes
- I watch Titanic annually
- I don’t post my kids on social media, hence the line drawings
- I often overshare, making this my perfect creative outlet!
Can you really improve your chances of having twins?
This is something I’ve repeatedly asked myself throughout my pregnancy and when deciding to share my experiences here. Was I going to have twins even if I didn’t do anything? Did I really influence my pregnancy? And the honest answer is that in the TTC realm, I don’t know. And I’ll never know. Because let’s face it: the research around supporting getting pregnant with twins is limited, really limited (unless you use fertility medications). Which makes sense – currently you’ll never get ethics approvals for studies where the desired outcome is a twin pregnancy. It’s sort of like asking whether buying a raffle ticket will change the outcome of the raffle: it might, but you’ll never know.
All that science can tell us right now is that yes, there are a lot of things that boost overall fertility. And yes, twin pregnancies are more likely in certain circumstances. And also yes, some people do fall pregnant with twins even if their chance of a twin pregnancy is super slim, like me. Finally, yes, in my heart, I believe I did play a role in getting pregnant with my twins. Which leads to me sometimes quietly wondering which baby was my “bonus” baby, before the thought drifts off and I stare down at my two darlings in absolute awe.
What I can guarantee you is that I definitely influenced my ability to carry twins to full-term, back by research.
Can you really ‘thrive’ and love life as a twin mom?
This one I don’t need to think twice about. Absolutely, 100%. Don’t get me wrong – there is a lot about having twins that is hard. Have you ever tried burping two babies at once? What about tandem breastfeeding while your toddler has a tummy bug and is power spewing right in front of you but you can’t just pick up both latched babies and run to him? Even tandem breastfeeding in general. What about managing twins at the airport or inside a plane where they both have a mommy preference and are fighting over who gets to sit with her and who gets stuck with daddy? We experience challenges daily, just like anyone else. And yet, I still absolutely adore twin mom life. I could spend hours writing about the hows and whys here, so instead I’ll endeavour to create a series of blogs around how I do it, how you can too, and why you shouldn’t fear the twin life if you’re currently expecting twins (or multiples in general).
